Hibernicis

Hi there, so good to meet you, as you know I’m a huge fan of your brand…
What’s in a name? Why Hibernicis?

Hibernicis is named after my second home, Ireland. Hibernicis is Latin and literally means “from Ireland”. Latin was read by scholars when Catholicism was introduced to Ireland around the 5th Century. In addition, the symbol on our packaging is an earlier language called Ogham, of which you can still find inscribed on some standing stones in Ireland today. The Ogham symbol translates as “Hibernicis”. To complement this, English and Irish are also included on our packaging, completing four languages that were written and spoken in Ireland throughout the ages.

How would you sum up your brand ethos?
Although this is a terribly overused word I can’t think of a better one. Authentic I wanted to create a range that is a pleasure to apply, that is incredibly comfortable on the skin, sublime texture that contains very high levels of natural ingredients. (This is clearly defined on our website, Hibernicis.com). I wanted Hibernicis to be an effective skincare range for the body for all ages, genders with an option for varying climatic situations and moods. I also wanted to reflect a more sophisticated representation of Ireland, its vast natural beauty and culture. Don’t get me wrong, I think Ireland  has a fabulous global image, I just wanted to add an another beautiful layer to that. Hibernicis was created in Ireland and all of our photography is taken in Ireland.

Who or what inspires you?
Nature, aroma, taste, animals, art in all its forms, music… the list goes on and varies over the years.
What does a typical day in the life of the founder of Hibernicis look like?
This varies so much it’s almost impossible to answer. When I am at home (in the country), which isn’t enough at the moment, I like to step outside first thing, preferably with a cup of hot water or coffee. This is usually followed by a bath, a second coffee then work.
Tragically, and one thing I know I desperately need to do and is missing from my daily routine is exercise, although I do walk quite bit. At home I tend to cook a lot and our house is usually filled with family, friends and visitors. When I am away working, where possible I fling open windows to let in fresh air, walk as much as possible to meetings and a coffee remains the staple.

I love all your products, but what is your favourite product?
I go through stages depending on the situation, mood or climate I am in, but it’s hard to go past my exfoliator as it is gentle but incredibly effective and really invigorates me, followed by my Hibernicis Shower Oil “Sonas”, which is uplifting and a very quick moisturising option for someone on the go. But, if I were on a desert island I would take my Body Lotion “Athlíon”

What advice do you have for other female entrepreneurs looking to follow their dream out there?
There is no two ways around it, you need to put in the hard work. Our landscape is changing at an unprecedented speed, so what you may have thought was the path to success at the beginning of your journey may be redundant at the time of launch. Be prepared, be flexible, listen, get a good team around you and be creative.
Talk to me about Ogham…
Ahh, I jumped the gun here by explaining a little bit before, but I’ll add some more detail. It is not completely agreed, but Ogham was an ancient written language and alphabet used in Ireland anywhere from the 2nd to 9th century. Interestingly, there is a lot of inspiration that came from trees and Ogham is sometimes referred to as an ancient tree language. Originally it was inscribed on trees, wooden stakes and on the edge of standing stones, of which only the stones survive today I think visually, it is quite beautiful. Its history is unique particularly with the reference to trees and, as a result, I thought it to be a perfect iteration for Hibernicis
As someone who loves a bath, I was fascinated to read that bathing was considered medicinal in ancient times…do you think in this modern age we’ve should return to the art of bathing rather than showering?
I just love a bath too and where possible, will have one daily….And how lucky am I, to be able to create a range centred around that activity. I’m all for more bathing, and while we are at it, let’s add a steam room..(I wish)! We are very fortunate to live in times where bathing is considered necessity and not a privilege for the elite few, however I still feel it is a time for reflection and relaxation be it in the bath or a shower. Let’s turn it into an everyday privilege and compliment it with quality cleansing and moisturising products… this is one of the reasons why I developed Hibernicis.
