With Father’s Day looming, you can’t go wrong with gifting a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black label to your nearest and dearest. This classic spirit was launched by grocer Johnnie Walker in 1820 in the Scottish burgh of Kilmarnock; since then it has been appointed the royal tipple of choice.

This smooth amber nectar is perfect for a nightcap, and of course, I joined my dad in sampling a wee dram. However, my palette was not quite accustomed to the smoky aroma that was just whisky and ice, so I raided the fridge and found a fiery ginger ale, which was the perfect accompaniment to the vanilla and toffee flavours, and added a little dilution, rather than taking anything away.

It would work in many other cocktail combinations too.
